Current owners Jerry and <a rel="nofollow" title="Ann Fent">Ann Fent</a> are only the third owners in its 81-year history.<p/> Built as a four-plex in 1921, <a rel="nofollow" title="John Holmes">John Holmes</a> and <a rel="nofollow" title="Chris Johnson">Chris Johnson</a> saw potential in the sadly neglected building and decided to give it new life by transforming it into a single-family, 4,000 square-foot single-family home.<p/> PhotoArt Studios. The gadget incorporates 16 of the most popular socket sizes in one tool. The wrench has two heads, each with four sockets. Each of the sockets is designed to fit a standard size as well as its nearly equivalent metric size. The user rotates the head to the desired socket. Arrest made in Stanton double homicide - Orange County Register Posted: 29 Oct 2009 10:08 PM PDT SANTA ANA – Nearly nine months after the co-owner of a Stanton mobile home business and his longtime secretary were shot to death, investigators believe they have the man responsible for pulling the trigger. Hilbert Pinnel Thomas, 38, of Garden Grove was arrested Wednesday night after an intense round-the-clock stakeout of the dead woman's Lexus. "He is an indiscriminate, cold-blooded killer," said Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. Thomas remains behind bars. Matthew Scott, 42, and Elizabeth Palmer, 49, were shot and killed the morning of Feb. 2 in the front office of the mobile home sales business on Beach Boulevard. Scott's father, Don, walked into the office to find his son and his long-time secretary shot to death. He called 911 to report the deaths. Palmer's white Lexus GS 300 was missing from its usual parking spot, he told authorities. It was that white Lexus that proved to be the missing link for Sheriff's Department investigator Joe Gaul. After dozens of tips and an emotional plea for help from Palmer's family, the car and the killer remained on the lam. Every week, Gaul talked to Palmer's husband Richard, updating him on the case. Last week, Gaul was able to tell him something different. They had found Elizabeth's Lexus, and they were watching it – hoping it would lead them to her killer. Parked in a forgotten corner of the El Dorado Inn, an apartment complex at 3360 W. Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim, the Lexus sat – just four miles from where Matthew Scott and Elizabeth Palmer lost their lives. The license plates had been removed – replaced with paper plates. It was shiny, like it had just been washed. Investigators waited and watched. Dozens of investigators from the Sheriff's Department and nearby agencies banged on doors and talked to people, hoping for a clue to who held the keys to the Lexus – and the case. On Wednesday, investigators ended their stakeout at the 300-unit apartment complex. The Lexus GS 300 was towed to a forensics laboratory and technicians combed the car for evidence. Hours later they had their man, Gaul said. Investigators were tight-lipped Thursday about how they linked Thomas to the double-murder. What they were sure of, Gaul said, was they had evidence to connect him to the crime. After nearly nine months, Gaul was able to give the news he wanted to give to Richard Palmer – they had the man they think killed Elizabeth. "This last week has just been a nailbiter," said Richard Palmer. "I'm just glad they caught this guy." But why someone would shoot the Stanton businessman and his secretary remains a mystery. Richard Palmer said he called his wife right before she was shot to death. "It was just a normal, boring day at work," he said. Minutes later, his wife would be dead. "I can't see killing two people over a lousy car," Richard Palmer said. "She would have just given him the keys and anything else he wanted and he would have left." Celtics torch hapless Bobcats - Worcester Telegram & Gazette Posted: 29 Oct 2009 06:30 AM PDT BOSTON —  Maybe the Celtics will be able to get by without Glen "Big Baby" Davis after all. After ending an 11-game losing streak in Cleveland Tuesday to start the season, the Celtics toyed with the Charlotte Bobcats, 92-59, last night at the Garden in their home opener. Charlotte's 59 points broke the franchise record for fewest in a game by three and came within two of the fewest allowed by Boston since the shot clock was instituted for the 1953-54 season. Davis is expected to be sidelined 6-8 weeks after breaking his right thumb in a fistfight with a friend late Sunday night and undergoing surgery Tuesday. With the way the Celtics have played without him and the anger Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck expressed with him, Davis must be wondering if he'll ever be able to break back into the lineup when he's healthy again. Tuesday, even without Davis, the Celtics bench outscored Cleveland's, 26-10, in a 95-89 victory. Last night, Boston's starters reminded everyone that they're not bad, either. The starters scored all but seven points while the Celtics jumped out to a 67-41 lead through three quarters. Ray Allen scored 18 points, Paul Pierce pumped in 15, Rajon Rondo collected 10 points and 11 assists, and Kevin Garnett had 10 points and seven rebounds. Kendrick Perkins came within a point of giving Boston five starters in double-figure scoring, finishing with nine points to go with his seven boards. Replacing Davis, Shelden Williams had 12 points and nine rebounds. Gerald Wallace paced the Bobcats, who never led, with 10 points. The Bobcats ranked last in the NBA in scoring last season, and they don't appear to be any more proficient at putting the ball in the basket this year. The Celtics, who ranked first in defensive field goal percentage last year, limited the Bobcats to 28.3 percent through three quarters and 31.1 percent overall last night. Charlotte had only two more baskets (23) than turnovers. "We always stress high hands," Pierce said. "We're able to get out in the passing lanes, force turnovers and get out on the break. It makes things easier when you're doing those things." "I thought it was great," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of his team's defense. "Obviously, very active early. Tons of deflections. We keep that number, and it was as high as you can possibly get at halftime, and I thought it carried over. The last two nights, it was absolutely wonderful." "The majority of our practices are schemes and how we're going to defend," Garnett said. The Celtics made 11 3-pointers to Charlotte's none. Antoine Walker would have loved to play in this game. "We're taking good 3s," Rivers said. "I'm a fan of a 3 if the ball starts from the inside and works its way out. I thought that's what we did especially in the second half. Most of them came from drives to the basket and out, and post and out. In the first half, I thought we went through that stretch where we were searching for the 3-point line." The game was over after three quarters, but the Garden waited until 5:43 remained in the fourth to show the disco-dancing Gino on the scoreboard. Garnett had to explain to Rasheed Wallace, who made his Garden debut as a Celtic, that showing Gino is the video equivalent of lighting up a victory cigar. "He was asking why the crowd was going crazy," Garnett said, "and I had to explain the whole Gino thing." The Celtics used a 25-10 third quarter to stretch their lead to 67-41. Charlotte needed a Raymond Felton jumper at the buzzer to reach double figures in the quarter. Felton returned after getting 15 stitches in his lower right lip in the second quarter. The Celtics outscored Charlottte, 21-2, to start the second half and extend their lead to 63-33. Pierce's 3-pointer capped a 15-0 spurt to open the half and make it 57-31 midway through the third. White House Garden reaps fall harvest for soup kitchen - Baltimore Sun Posted: 29 Oct 2009 06:04 PM PDT WASHINGTON - Cupboards at a soup kitchen near the White House will be spilling over for several days after a donation of fresh produce harvested Thursday from first lady Michelle Obama's vegetable garden. Mrs. Obama invited about 30 fifth-graders from two District of Columbia public elementary schools to help with the project. One of the schools, Bancroft Elementary, has helped with the garden since it began, preparing the soil, planting the seeds and harvesting in the spring. "Are you guys ready to do some work? Are you ready to work really hard? Are you ready to get dirty?" she asked them. "All right, let's go! Let's go, let's do it, let's do it." The students were broken up into groups of three and paired with an adult who instructed them on what to do. All told, they spent about a half-hour jabbing and digging at the plot on the South Lawn with pitchforks and other tools. They filled one wheelbarrow with huge sweet potatoes and filled baskets and bowls with carrots, fennel, red leaf lettuce and more. The total weight was not immediately available, but everything is to be given to Miriam's Kitchen. Mrs. Obama helped serve meals there earlier this year. The first lady and her group first tackled sweet potatoes before moving on to carrots and big bulbs of fennel. At one point, she held up a one of the larger orange-colored spuds and said: "This can feed an army." Before the harvesting began, she said she and daughters, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, already had helped themselves to some sweet potatoes. The harvest was the second for the garden. More than 70 pounds of lettuce and 12 pounds of peas came out of a springtime harvest of the 1,100-square-foot, L-shaped plot. After that, fall crops were planted, leading to Thursday's event. Mrs. Obama started the garden in March, saying she wanted to use it to talk about the importance of eating a nutritious diet and show what good, fresh food tastes like. She said the garden already has produced more than 740 pounds of food, at a cost of about $180 to prepare the soil and plant the seeds. Some has been served at White House events. Two more arrested in Garden City shooting - Idaho Statesman Posted: 22 Oct 2009 11:21 PM PDT Two more men have been arrested in connection with Monday's shooting death of 25-year-old Irving Romero at a Garden City mobile home park. Garden City police arrested Michael Lee Stolp, 24, of Boise on Thursday. Police say Stolp was the owner and driver of the truck witnesses reported fleeing the scene of the murder. Stolp was charged Thursday with felony accessory to murder. Police also charged Christopher Lee Naughtin, 28, of Boise with two felonies — being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and destruction of evidence. Naughtin, who was driving murder suspect Carlos Navarrete when he was arrested, was also charged with misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon and driving without a license. Officials say Naughtin's charges are not related to Romero's death. Both men were scheduled for arraignment Friday. Navarrete, 27, was arrested Tuesday morning at a residence near State Street and Ellens Ferry Drive in Boise, less than three miles from the Garden City mobile home park where Romero was killed. Prosecutors said Navarrete was identified as the shooting suspect by five of eight people at a Garden City trailer at the time of the Monday shooting. Navarrete, who Garden City police described as a transient, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 3 before 4th District Magistrate Michael Oths on a charge of second-degree murder. He is being held on a $1 million bond. Ada County Coroner's officials say Romero, 25, was killed Monday by a single gunshot wound to the back. Deputy Prosecutor Jonathan Medema said Wednesday that trouble began Monday morning when Navarrete went to the trailer park in the 8300 block of Chinden Boulevard and got angry after he went inside and discovered Romero there. Medema said a verbal dispute ensued, which ended when Romero was shot as he walked out of the trailer. Garden City police responding to a 911 call about 11:40 a.m. Monday found Romero lying in the driveway in lot 28 in the Poplar Trailer Park. By then, Navarrete had left the home. Garden City Police Chief Jim Bensley said Wednesday the trailer was described as a "flophouse" by neighbors who were concerned about possible drug activity. Romero and Navarrete have lengthy misdemeanor criminal records. Romero has been convicted of assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. Goodbye organic home garden 2009. hello, garden 2010! - Examiner Posted: 28 Oct 2009 03:42 PM PDT Comment Print Email RSS Subscribe Subscribe Most home gardeners I know take the dread out of planting next spring's garden by doing the grunge, clean-up work in the fall---from removing pooped-out plants to putting away gardening tools. Then, come spring, the plot is ready to till and plant. I dig that kind of clean-up wisdom. Sort of puts me in mind of cleaning up the kitchen after a dinner party. Who doesn't dread being greeted the next morning by a sink full of dishes, utensils, pots and pans with dried-on food, crumbs on the table, chairs and floor? Last Saturday, a nice, rain-free fall day finally dawned in Central Minnesota, the kind that beckons us outdoors. We obeyed the beckoning, and headed out to the garden spot for a little happy ho-ho-hoeing and digging. Clean-up work isn't as conducive to idle chit-chat as it is to good hard-core thinking. As I put my back into the task of hoeing, I daydreamed what fellow gardeners probably dream---a technicolor movie playing on my mental movie screen of us tilling and planting, an effort with a payoff of a lush garden space filled with an abundant crop of succulent, tasty fruits and veggies. Enough even to pass around to friends and neighbors. In a little more than 90 minutes, the earth was freed of dead stuff, weeds included, all crammed into waste bags the city will pick up. While I dug and hoed, I'd spied quite a few squirmy worms, working the land on our behalf.. A nearby black walnut tree had deposited a hefty amount of its leaves, which we raked and arranged on top of the garden. Food for the soil! Between now and January, we'll figure out what varieties we want to eat next year. An editor/publisher I know finds that his planning/pre-planting efforts are the perfect antidote to ward off mid-winter blues and blahs. As we did this year, we'll map out on paper where to place the plants, making sure we rotate the crops. (Linda Larson supplies guidance in, "Grow It, Eat It." Read my review if you're thinking of buying this handy sidekick.) For now, all I know for certain is: we'll buy organic bedding plants from the Good Earth Food Co-op in St. Cloud, we'll start some plants from Seeds of Change organic seeds…and we may take a friend's recommendation to buy seeds from Seed Savers Seed Savers is a seed bank based in Decorah, Iowa. They enjoy a healthy online presence. Tami buys her seeds there, and highly recommends it. I visited their website. Visitors, whether members or not, can buy seeds; a benefit of membership is being able to sell seeds to buyers. Many of the seeds offered for sale are heirloom quality, that is, ones handed down from generation to generation. They should be a safe bet, free of GMOs, just as organic seeds from Seeds of Change are. If you're trying to avoid GMO-tainted foods, it makes sense not to grow foods from GMO-tainted seeds. Garden's clean, plans are fixed for next year, and so my gardening tale ends...with a wistful goodbye to 2009, along with a hearty thanks for feeding us pretty well.. As we wait for the locker rooms to open for pregame media access, here's a few notes: Reloaded: The Celtics have distributed 20,000 green T-shirts with the team logo and the slogan "Reloaded" on most seatbacks inside the arena. Celtics team president Rich Gotham said, "The entire organization shares the same excitement and anticipation as our fans as we tip off the 2009-10 season in pursuit of Banner 18." The Celtics will be looking for a green-out inside the Garden to kick off the season. Mark Carthy, 32, built a 4ft sandpit, two grassy areas, pipes and a water feature for the animals, which were given to his partner, Donna Rollason, for her 28th birthday eight weeks ago. "We were told we wouldn't be able to tame them, but they eat out of my hand," he said. The couple and their sons Liam, 10, and Cody, 4, feed the meerkats on dog food, fruit, day-old chicks, locusts, crickets and quail eggs. Mr Carthy hopes to breed them, but said that he would be very careful that the homes they would go to would be properly equipped and the new owners would have the right knowledge. Bruce "Diamond" Greggs, pleaded guilty to two counts of selling cocaine in 2006 in the Easton area, court records say. When Greggs is sentenced, prosecutors plan to dismiss a more serious charge that Greggs distributed two kilograms of cocaine, records say. Greggs is scheduled to be sentenced January 28 before U.S. District Judge Lawrence Stengel, records say. Greggs was arrested in July 2008 during a dawn raid on his home in the 700 block of Spring Garden Street. Police said the arrest was a result of a two-year investigation that focused on Greggs and his business partner, Donnell "Bebe" Jackson. Jackson's case is still making its way through federal court, records say. Following the raid on the Easton home, he went on the lam for several weeks before he was nabbed in New York. Both Jackson and Greggs have previously been convicted for selling drugs. Jackson was convicted in 2005 for dealing drugs in Warren County and was sentenced to 90 days in prison and two years of probation. A Villa Somewhere - Egypt Today Posted: 27 Oct 2009 09:34 PM PDT Just as pleasing as the food at Villa 55 is the atmosphere. Tucked away on Road 9 in Maadi, across from the popular American home-style eatery Lucille's, this garden restaurant is a great place to take a break from the city's roaring hustle and bustle. When considering ambience, the creative owners of Villa 55 seem to have thought of everything. Upon arrival we were greeted by a valet who offered us a parking space in the restaurant's private driveway (the best part: you don't have to hand over your keys). Once parked, we walked through the garden's iron gates onto a charming cobblestone path. The wicker furniture, palm trees and lush grass in the outdoor seating area are reminiscent of a quieter time and place. Given that it was a hot, muggy day, my companion and I opted for the air-conditioned indoor area. We came upon an equally elegant and tranquil indoor setting: warm lighting over pale blue walls and dark, hardwood floors — framed by flowing, floor-to-ceiling white curtains and French doors. As a non-smoker, I'm pleased to report there is a distinct division between the smoking and non-smoking sections, enabling a truly smoke-free meal. Then came the food: my companion started with a bowl of steaming French Onion Soup (LE 10) topped with a round of white bread. He described the soup as "having just the right amount of 'oniony-ness'." I set my sights on the Smoked Salmon (LE 39), which arrived on a large white oblong plate, garnished with lettuce, capers, mayonnaise and onions — leaving my guest and I to dress the chilled fish as creatively as we liked, making this my favorite part of the meal. For the main course, I ordered the colorful Spanish Paella (LE 50). A steamed-to-perfection yellow rice with red peppers, calamari, fish, shrimp — and the odd fried chicken drumstick — the perfect dish for someone who can't make up their mind (or someone doing a restaurant review). Meanwhile, my companion savored the Piccata Mushroom (LE 46). Though unimpressed by the side of fries, (perhaps rice would have been better) he was more enthusiastic about the main attraction: "It's rare for the mushroom sauce to be enough to make it through every bite of steak, so that was a nice surprise." With little room left in our stomachs after the main course, we soldiered through dessert out of dedication to the readers (it's a tough job, but somebody has to do it). My guest asked for the rich Chocolate Brownie A La Mode (LE 21) and I went for the Tiramisu (LE 17). Dessert came out within minutes, both in the center of a white plate with (evidently) minimal effort put into presentation. The tiramisu wasn't really all that extraordinary: fluffy, velvety and sweet. It met, but didn't exceed, our expectations. The brownie was the better choice. The option of indoor or outdoor seating at Villa 55 makes it a great place to grab a drink with friends in a quiet setting, when you actually want to be able to hear each other. Drinks-wise, tropical combinations dominated. I ended up with the Banana Havana (LE 15) a mixture of banana, orange and strawberry juice — very tasty and refreshing on a hot summer day. My companion tried the Virgin Mary (LE 11), which reportedly "had just the right amount of tabasco and spice." Besides leaving with our stomachs full, the serenity of our surroundings left us feeling rejuvenated. Villa 55 is a yet-to-be-discovered chill spot in Cairo. Other patrons included couples seeking some quiet time together, families enjoying the outdoor setting and businessmen chatting over sandwiches. Families will feel right at home; they've even created a kid's corner. Overall, the menu has something for everyone, the service is more than cordial — and you get your money's worth. Beaverton students will help grow food for the Oregon Food Bank - OregonLive.com Posted: 27 Oct 2009 05:10 PM PDT By Ellen Gilmer, The Oregonian October 27, 2009, 5:00PM BEAVERTON -- Oregon Food Bank has teamed up with Beaverton schools for a garden that will feed people in the community. The food bank will open its Westside Learning Garden at Five Oaks Middle School, blocks away from the food bank's new Washington County facility planned for Northwest 173rd Avenue and Cornell Road. The middle school is home to the Rachel L. Carson School Of Environmental Science, and students in that program will help maintain the site and study the garden in their curriculum. So far, the students have helped with weed control, fertilizer and preparing sites for plant beds. During summer break, food bank volunteers will maintain the land. The food bank is moving from its Hillsboro location because it has grown out of the site. The new facility is larger but lacks gardening space. Working with the middle school was a natural solution, said Rebecca Siplak, OFB learning garden coordinator. "Their providing the land for us is enormous," she said. "It's great to get kids involved in gardening. They've wanted to have a garden for years." Last year, the food bank's garden in Hillsboro produced 7,700 pounds of food. Officials hope to reach similar levels with the new garden, but expect at least the first year to produce slightly less than the 7,700 pounds. Rebecca Hall, science teacher at Rachel Carson, said the partnership fits in perfectly with the school's philosophy of service learning and community involvement. It also allows for practical lessons, such as learning about the pH of soil or understanding the compost process. So says Riceville resident Charlie Hopper, who recently launched the Botany Buddy Tree and Shrub Finder interactive database for mobile devices such as the Apple iphone. It's a love of dirt and the green that grows from it that brought Hopper and Botany Buddy co-founder Byron Webster of Austin, Texas, together, and it's that same love that the two believe will make their new application a success. The Botany Buddy database includes a listing of more than 1,200 native and ornamental trees and shrubs, according to Hopper, with a follow-up version expanding to cover flowers. The database also includes more than 4,500 full-color photos, which Hopper got from an Oregon State University library collection. Botany Buddy is donating a portion of proceeds to the college to be used for horticulture program scholarships, Hopper says. The Botany Buddy application sells for $9.99 and is available in the Apple iphone online application store. Each plant listing includes 25 fields of information so that a user can search on everything from a botanical name to plant growth habits. The application includes tips for amateur green thumbs, Hopper says, and allows users to create collections of plant profiles to be shared with other users. A user can also upload their own photos to create a personalized database for a project such as a home garden, according to Hopper. The landscape designer says Botany Buddy can help a professional by simplifying, and speeding up, the way information is shared with potential clients. Hopper also notes that Botany Buddy won't take money from a commercial vendor to include their product in the database. The goal is to keep it free from that influence, and Botany Buddy requires users to exchange photos for free. Hopper hooked up with Webster last year when both were looking to reinvent themselves. The two grew up together and got their hands dirty as teenagers by laying sod. The landscape design industry took a hard hit when the economy nose-dived last year, says Hopper, who began looking for other ways to bring in money. Webster, who worked in marketing and communications, had begun working for a company that built iphone applications, and when they reconnected and saw what the other was working on, they hit on the Botany Buddy idea. "Gardening is still a growing market," Hopper says. Gardeners are a diverse lot, and Botany Buddy aims to bring together their many varied communities of like-minded people online. "We're going to an audience we know is there. We want to learn more from them about what they want." Beyond the technical side of Botany Buddy, Hopper says he hopes the application will boost sustainable landscape management. "The biggest key to sustainable landscape management is getting the right plant in the right spot, and nothing is more important than getting the right information in your hands. Police Monday said they are investigating the incident. In his complaint, the minister's brother Sanjay Maken alleged that three masked men tied the hands of guard Vipin Kumar late Friday, smashed windows of his car and were discussing how to rob a bank ATM across the road from his house in Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi. The assailants threatened the guard with dire consequences if he raised an alarm, the police said. They untied the guard after half an hour and left after breaking a side mirror of Sanjay's car, according to the complaint. "We have questioned the guard of ATM and he has denied seeing or knowing about any such incident. It is also strange that Kumar did not tell others before the morning. The gorgeous beachfront is preserved, and imminently livable little neighborhoods were created within the town as a whole. The paving is porous, minimizing runoff. No building may be more than 4 stories high. The houses all look as if they could be in New England. Their colors are all derived from the sea -- gentle pinks, tans and blues -- all soothing pastels. Whimsy, necessary for a perfect village, is evident in the Airstream trailers permanently parked on the highway in front of the village green. They are an extension of the commercial district that surrounds the central green, which is actually an amphitheater for community events, concerts and a weekly farmer's market. Under a canopy of trees, these classic trailers house what passes for fast food here. No chains can build in Seaside because local law requires businesses to be locally owned and operated. The smoky aroma of barbecue, the tang of fresh fruit drinks, and the smell of potatoes deep frying invite beach-goers to sit in the shade and enjoy a snack.
