Clark Feiser, the first male member of Auburn Antebellum Home, gives tourists a brief history of the house during Fall Pilgrimage last Thursday.

The ladies of Auburn Antebellum Home call him the Rhett Butler of Auburn, but Clark Feiser just considers himself a man who loves history and loves to meet new people.

When tourists arrive at Auburn during Pilgrimage they are greeted on the porch by Feiser, who is the first male member of Auburn Antebellum Home.

Adorned in his period-style white suit and straw brimmed hat, Feiser enchants the visitors with history of the house, allowing them a small glimpse into what life was like back in the mid to late 1800s.

"The women just love it," Feiser said, commenting about his outfit. "They come and take pictures."

Feiser began volunteering at the house about three years ago when he and his wife Phyllis moved to Natchez from Pennsylvania. He started doing light maintenance work and filling in when needed with tours. But, it wasn't until the official change of the house's name from the Auburn Garden Club to the Auburn Antebellum Home in September that Feiser was allowed to be a member.

"Clark has done so much since they first moved here," Auburn Antebellum Home member Donna Martello said. "So it's fitting that he became a member."

Since becoming a member, Feiser carries slightly more of the same duties as he did when he was a volunteer.

He still does light maintenance, like changing light bulbs and air filters, but now he is required to do tours.

During Pilgrimage he does tours on the porch and during the rest of the year he is required to do four tours a month.

"I just enjoy the house," Feiser said. "It's a fun house."

Auburn is owned by the City of Natchez but managed by Feiser's group. It was open for tours during Fall Pilgrimage and is open year round Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Leafs blown away in the Garden - Ottawa Sun

Posted: 12 Oct 2009 09:45 PM PDT

NEW YORK -- During every New York Rangers home game, the capacity throng at Madison Square Garden, referring to despised former Islander Denis Potvin, can be heard chanting "Potvin sucks."

Maple Leaf fans might very well be saying the same thing about their beloved team this morning.

Continuing one of the worst starts in team history, the free-falling Leafs dropped to 0-4-1 on the season with a humiliating 7-2 loss to the Rangers last night at the Garden.

You want mediocrity? You got it.

No Maple Leafs team has gone winless for this long at the beginning of a season since the 1990-91 squad, which came out of the gates with an 0-6-1 mark -- the worst ever start by Toronto.

The Leafs will get reinforcements against the Colorado Avalanche tonight. Viktor Stalberg has received medical clearance to play after having his bell rung last week, while defenceman Garnet Exelby will be reinserted into the lineup.

As for last night, yes, goalie Vesa Toskala wasn't great again, a point brought up by coach Ron Wilson.

"I don't know if Vesa feels he should have had any of (the goals)," Wilson said. "But there were a couple of times we could have used a key save."

But the problems with this team go much deeper than Toskala.

"(Vesa) was the only (bleepin') reason we were still in this game," forward Jamal Mayers yelled after the game.

"It's a two-way street," Toskala said. "I have to bail them out, they have to bail me out."

Wilson has preached that the team needs to get off to better starts. So what happens?

Just 72 seconds in, Lee Stempniak takes a needless tripping penalty in the offensive zone. Mike Komisarek is slapped with an undisciplined high sticking minor less than a minute later. Sure enough, with the Leafs down two men, Ryan Callahan gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead just 2:34 into the game.

By 8:08 of the first, Wade Redden's bad-angle shot found its way past Toskala. It marked the fourth consecutive game in which the Leafs have trailed by a 2-0 score.

So much for a good start.

The Leafs actually closed the gap to 3-2 after two periods, but collapsed in the third, giving up four goals.

Japanese Tea Garden getting a $4.5 million facelift - WOAI

Posted: 12 Oct 2009 03:04 PM PDT

SAN ANTONIO – A historic home will be getting a makeover. The Jingu House at the Japanese Tea Garden traces its origins to 1926 when then-Park Commissioner Ray Lambert asked Kimi Eizo Jingu to move to the location and open a tearoom called the "Bamboo Room."

Though Kimi Eizo died in the 30s, his family continued to operate it until 1942 when they were evicted because of anti-Japanese sentiment during World War II.

In all, $4.5 million will be spent on refurbishing and upgrading the building and grounds, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dividing the project into parts allows it to be undertaken as the money becomes available.

The San Antonio Parks Foundation signed the $838,313 contract last week. While undergoing reconstruction, the site will be fenced off; however, the other locations in the Garden will remain accessible.

The restoration of the Japanese Tea Garden is being done through a public-private partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Parks Foundation, and its affiliate organization Friends of the Parks.

In March of 2008, the Parks Foundation completed the refurbished Koi ponds and pavilion.
