Enter multiple comma-separated email recipients. The 13th annual Gatewood Historic District Home & Garden Tour will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Gatewood is bounded on the north and south by NW 23 and NW 16, by Pennsylvania Avenue on the west and Classen Boulevard on the east. More than 1,200 homes comprise the Gatewood Historic District. This year's tour will highlight four homes and two gardens in the historic neighborhood. This Colonial Revival brick home was built for Louis and Ora Mersfelder in 1928. Current owners Jerry and Ann Fent are only the third owners in its 81-year history. Built as a four-plex in 1921, John Holmes and Chris Johnson saw potential in the sadly neglected building and decided to give it new life by transforming it into a single-family, 4,000 square-foot single-family home. PhotoArt Studios. The front of this 1950s-era commercial style building is a personal gallery and the rear is both studio and personal space for owner Keith Rinearson, photography director for Southwest Publishing and Chesapeake Energy corporate photographer. This former brick warehouse was once the New State Ice Co. Today, the building has been transformed by owner Estrella Evans, who owns Velvet Monkey Salons, into retail space with a residential loft apartment. In addition, gardens will be open to visitors at 1919 NW 20 and 1928 NW 17. For more information, call Janet Seefeldt at 525-9441.Share with a friend

Home and garden news and notes - NWI.com Posted: 30 Oct 2009 09:52 PM PDT New tool offers 16 socket sizes Black & Decker has streamlined the socket wrench set with its new ReadyWrench. The gadget incorporates 16 of the most popular socket sizes in one tool. The wrench has two heads, each with four sockets. Each of the sockets is designed to fit a standard size as well as its nearly equivalent metric size. The user rotates the head to the desired socket. The ReadyWrench can be used like a ratchet for continuous turning and has a short-pin design that allows it to slide over nuts tightened down on long bolts. The socket can be positioned at a 45- or 90-degree to the handle. The product is expected to arrive at major retailers in the coming week and will cost about $30. Get decorating done in a jiffy Usually home decorating is an evolving process. But sometimes speed is of the essence -- say, when you're preparing to sell your house or you're just impatient for a change. That's Jill Vegas' forte. Vegas helps would-be decorators fast-forward their dreams in "Speed Decorating: A Pro Stager's Tips and Trade Secrets for a Fabulous Home in a Week or Less" ($21.95, Taunton Press). The book is in large part a typical decorating primer, but with a focus on getting things done fast. Vegas guides readers through such steps as assessing a room, setting a timeline and shopping smart, and gives suggestions for specific rooms. She offers lots of handy tips, such as ways to corral and disguise lamp cords and quick ideas for freshening a kitchen. The 60-30-10 rule HGTV.com lists the top 10 tips for adding color to your space. The classic 60-30-10 rule is my favorite. The site explains it like this: When decorating any room, divide the colors into percentages as follows. * 60 percent should be a dominant color, unifying the palette.(Think the walls.) * 30 percent should be a secondary color, providing visual interest. (Think the upholstery.) * 10 percent should be an accent color, adding that little bit of sparkle. (Think the accent pieces.) Style a la Cindy Crawford If anyone knows how quickly trends come and go, it's supermodel Cindy Crawford. So it's only logical a classic beauty like her would stick mainly to timeless pieces in her new home-furnishings collection, Cindy Crawford Style. Available at JCPenney and JCP.com, the line includes elegant and stylish designs in bedding, bath, decorative accessories, window treatments, accent furniture and lighting. From accent tables and wine racks to dinnerware and flatware, you'll find something for every room. Other pieces include serving trays, candle holders, shower curtains and bath rugs. Then there are the textured throws, which can be used to cover furniture to keep it clean. Or do you prefer 1980s vinyl? Elle Decor turns 20 Elle Decor is now 20 and to celebrate, editor in chief Margaret Russell and the other editors of the magazine have released "Style and Substance: The Best of Elle Decor" ($45, Filipacchi Publishing) -- a compilation of the hundreds of spaces that have been featured during the past two decades. They include the homes of celebs such as Madonna, Cindy Crawford and Sarah Jessica Parker. Of them all, "the most memorable rooms are confident rooms that not only exemplify good taste, they reflect the owner's personality," Russell said. Because "classic never goes out of style," she suggests investing in sofas, armchairs, cocktail tables -- the furniture that anchors your room -- that are as tailored and low-key as possible for those on a budget. Use inexpensive accessories to add trend-oriented color or pattern. For more ideas, see the book. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
