Some Garden City residents wrinkle nose at pot dispensary decision - The Tribune Posted: 23 Oct 2009 03:13 PM PDT
When informed that a medical marijuana dispensary will soon open just a few blocks from his home, Dave Rider let out an exasperated chuckle and shook his head. "Garden City has always done that — all through history," he said. Rider, a 4-1/2-year resident who rents a small house next door to Garden City Town Hall, doesn't like this latest development for the tiny community sandwiched between Greeley and Evans. "I think it's a can of worms," he said of the dispensaries. Garden City's genesis springs from its bigger neighbor's famed and longstanding prohibition on alcohol (intact until 1969). Now, with Greeley City Council this week putting the kibosh on marijuana dispensaries, and Evans council on the verge of doing likewise, Garden City is where you'll find pot for ailments being sold out of an 8th Avenue storefront. Rider, 45, fears a backslide from progress made in his neighborhood, which has benefited from Garden City's contract with the Evans Police Department. "In this particular little two-block area Evans has done a great job cleaning it up," he said. "There used to be a lot of gangs, a lot of drugs through here. It's a quiet little neighborhood here now." Read the rest of this story in Saturday's Tribune.

Flights Between Garden City, Wichita On Hold - KAKE TV Posted: 23 Oct 2009 11:02 AM PDT Friday, October 23, 2009 Garden City officials say discussion about possible flights between Wichita and cities in the Garden City area are at a standstill. Rachelle Powell, director of aviation at Garden City Regional Airport, says there's still interest in the flights, but funding sources aren't currently available. Powell met with city officials earlier this month to discuss a feasibility study on the flights. The study found that it would be cheaper to drive than to fly from places like Garden City, Liberal and Dodge City to the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. However, Powell says there is still support for the flights because they would save time for travelers. Currently, no air service connects Wichita to the rest of the state.
