The news that the U.S. employers cut another 85,000 workers last month was barely out Friday when President Barack Obama announced $2.3 billion in tax incentives for the creation of alternative energy and clean technology jobs.

The unemployment report confirmed what Vermonters already know -- that the economic recovery is going to be slow and uneven.

According to government figures, the jobless rate held at 10 percent, but when the increasing number of those who have given up looking is factored in, the real unemployment percentage is 17.3.

No matter how long the country remains out of technical recession, this record-setting downturn will not be over until everyone who wants a job has one.

If the government is going to pour money into job creation, and one can certainly argue that wisdom, let's hope some of that money comes to Vermont's emerging technology and energy businesses.

Unrelated to the new stimulus, Sen. Patrick Leahy is expected to announce this morning in Milton that three northern Vermont companies -- Ascension Technologies and Omni Medical Systems of Milton, and Liquid Measurement Systems of Georgia -- will receive an infusion of federal funding.

That can only be good news for people seeking employment in technology-related fields.

Those seeking positve news can also look to information provided by Bruce Seifer of CEDO that more than a dozen firms in the Burlington area are hiring.

Among them: Dealer.com; Blodgett Ovens; Burton Snowboards; Gardener's Supply; General Dynamics; Edlund; Fletcher Allen; UVM and more.

Many Vermonters have been out of work for six months or more, and it's understandable that they might quit looking.

I hope they can find the strength to keep trying, and I hope the jobs will be there when they do.
